Basic Guide to Editing Movies in imovies

Editing in imovies
Prior to commencing the actual editing of your videos you have to import them into iMovie. The videos will then be lined up in the video clips section, from where you can drag and arrange them in iMovie's timeline interface.

Master clips splitting:
At this stage, the point is to title and arrange your various clips, which is useful for saving your hard drive space. In addition to mantaining good order, thus you are in a position to search for them easily.

You can now shift to the timeline view and actually plot the points where your video starts and ends. It is also possible to actually click on the arrows appearing on the bottom of your video playing in the window. And choose the start and end points using two triangles which lie right at the bottom. Master clips which make up many scenes should be split into smaller ones that comprise only one scene. To do this shift the playhead to
the very first frame of a scene, go ahead and click Edit > Split Video Clip on playhead. As a result the original clip will be separated into two scenes.

Cropping:
Sometimes you will end up with poor quality scenes that are either out of focus or unstable among other problems. In such a situation, it is advisable to trash them to avoid compromising the quality of your project. In the event that the unusable part is at the beginning or end of clip you can simply split the clips (as shown in the first step). But if the part you want to trash lies in the middle of the clip, in this case make use of markers found below the playhead. Highlight the part of the clip you want to dissolve (it'll appear in yellow).
To make use of highlighted part, click Edit > Crop, or alternatively employ the keyboard shortcut Apple + K. This part of the clip will be set aside (in yellow), and the rest will be deleted. Whereas in order to trash the highlighted part and preserve the rest of the clip, simply click delete. And it is important to note that
with iMovie, clips deleted in this manner (both techniques) cannot be restored or retrieved. That is, they do not appear in the trash bin. Renaming clips Following the separation process, it becomes necessary to list the
remaining clips under specific titles for easy identification. To do this, double-click on a clip and a clip info box will open. You can then replace the name appearing in the name field with a title of your choice.

Editing:
Once you are done with the trashing and renaming of all of your videos, it is time to add some effects to your video. And to open the effects window, click on the Editing button. The iMovie editing tools allow you to add effects, text, transitions as well as audio effects. If you are keen on the effects lasting the full video then  "effect-in" and "effect-out" must be set at 0. To last for shorter periods, adjust the settings till it matches your desired length of time.
