Veergati

After a spate of flops, Salman decided to pull his socks up and work hard on his body and image. Its sparkling effects were more than visible in his action-packed flicks like Karan Arjun and Veergati giving the stunner another excuse to flaunt his newly-acquired packs and clean-shaven chest.

Suryavanshi

Salman played a warrior married to Amrita Singh, sporting a Hulk Hogan-inspired hairstyle in this reincarnation drama. It flopped miserably at the box office.

Salman's sexy shirtless saga

While Shah Rukh and Aamir Khan woke up to the concept of body-sculpting only in the forties, the other Khan has been noted for his bulging physique since forever.
Meet Salman Khan, Bollywood's original pin-up boy. Whether it's to project full-on masculinity or flaunt relentless sex-appeal, Salman prefers to save his shirt for the dryers.
As the star turns a year older on December 27, we made a list of some his prominent shirtless appearances on screen over the years. Take a look. Spot the difference.
Maine Pyar Kiya
One saw a lot of this poster and Salman during the late 1980s when Sooraj Barjatya's roaring blockbuster hit the screens. Rather scrawny compared to his current-day beefy avatar, don't you think?

Amitabh Bachchan starts blogging

Opinions were divided on the Big B's entry into the blogosphere. Some felt he was articulating basic thoughts goodnaturedly, others thought he was undoing the mystique by writing about absolutely everything, while still others smarted at the way Bachchan took potshots at everyone who annoyed him.
Still, the fact remains that before he came along, 'blog' was an alien word to the industry: and now everyone's got one.

Ranbir-Deepika, and another tattoo

Saif-Kareena is so last year. Without even nickname speculation (Ranpika? Deebir?), this relationship between the star kids of a badminton player and a Bollywood romantic has taken centrestage.
Gushing tell-all interviews take up magazine spreads, and the attractive Ms Padukone has embellished the back of her neck with her man's letters: RK, a tattoo that may well just be a banner.

Bollywood's milestones in 2008

The Year of A R Rahman
This year, the maestro was everywhere. And that's always a good thing.
Not just did Allah Rakha Rahman, now 42, give us a slew of eclectic soundtracks far more than his usual Hindi film quota -- Ghajini, Ada, Yuvvraaj, Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and Jodhaa Akbar -- but the man also picked up a Golden Globe nod for his phenomenal score in Danny Boyle's Bombay-lovin' Slumdog Millionaire.

'I have to lose weight all over again for Raju's film'

Did he lose sleep in his quest to get into shape?
"In fact, I slept well," Aamir said. "I slept eight hours everyday. You need to sleep well when you want to get in this kind of shape."
Did he take advice from the other muscle men in the industry? "Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan gave me advice," he added. "Salman was one of the first actors of the industry to get into body building. His tips were helpful."
Did he take the help of steroids? "I don't believe in them," AAmir replied. "There are no short cuts for body building. Moreover, these steroids have side affects. Body building takes five years on an average but I gave my best shot, and got it in one year. I hope my fans like this new look in Ghajini."
"Aamir and I have worked four hours a day on an average, for 13 months. Even if he was busy with his films or other assignments, he would never miss his workout regime," Chourasia said.
Unfortunately, Aamir cannot keep his fab abs for long. He will have to lose weight for his new film, Rajkumar Hirani's Three Idiots.
"I have to lose weight all over again for Raju's film. I have to look like a college boy. I hope to get my Ghajini shape back after that film," Aamir said.
"It's like building a Taj Mahal and then destroying it," Chourasia concluded.

'He would scream in pain but would never give up'

But did the role require such rigorous training? "My director wanted me in that particular look so I thought I should give it a shot," Aamir said. "I didn't want to let him down."
But he admitted that there were times when he felt like giving up.
"There were days when I felt like quitting because some exercises were very painful," Aamir said. "But if you have determination, you can do it. I had a lot of fat content in my body. The end result could have been better but I was satisfied with what I achieved."
"I have worked with many people but I feel Aamir has extraordinary will power," Chourasia said. "He would scream in pain but would never give up."

'He would torture me to do things that I could not'

I call him jallad (devil) because he would torture me to do things that I could not," Aamir said, recalling his training days for Ghajini.
Aamir started training in December 2006, so that he would be in shape when the shooting started with director A Murugadoss.
Surya, who starred in the original Tamil version, also worked out regularly for the role.

How Aamir trained for Ghajini

Ten years ago when Aamir Khan was on the lookout for a muscular man for a role in Ghulam, he spotted a youngster, who had come to Film City, with his brother. Aamir learnt that he was new to Mumbai, and was in the city of dreams to pursue a career in acting. The youngster auditioned, and Aamir saw that he could not act.
"I advised that boy to get into body building, as acting was not meant for him. He was better suited for that job," recalled Aamir.
Four years later, Aamir bumped into the youngster again. This time, he wasn't a struggling actor. Instead, he was responsible for giving Saif Ali Khan his new and improved fit look.
Today, that same youngster -- who goes by the name Satyajit Chourasia -- is responsible for giving Aamir his fab abs in Ghajini.

'Aditya is my jaan'

Aditya is my jaan. He is very intelligent. We share the same vibes. I choreographed the songs methodically, showed him line by line. If he liked it, we kept it, otherwise, it was changed. But if I liked some dance steps that he didn't, I would convince him. He is very understanding. He's not bossy, and is open to ideas.
Also, very focused and professional. I learnt a lot from him. I am a big fan of Aditya. He never loses his cool or throws tantrum.
Since I had worked with him earlier, it was easy this time. Adi knows my style so he did not have to brief me much about what he wanted. But he told me that he wanted the Shiamak style of dance -- not very Indian and not very western.
Yash uncle would come on the sets in the evenings, and get groundnuts for me. I would give him a tight hug and pull his cheeks in return.

Making Shah Rukh dance

Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi revolves around a dance competition, where the actor pairs up with newcomer Anushka Sharma. Dance, obviously, is an important part of the film.
And to make the lead pair dance like a dream are two very talented choreographers, Shiamak Davar and Vaibhavi Merchant.
Shiamak has choreographed the songs, Dance Pe Chance, Dancing Jodi and Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte while Vaibhavi does the rest of the songs. Patcy N spoke to each of them about their experiences. Over to Shiamak:
Tell us about the songs.
Dancing Jodi is a finale song where Shah Rukh and Anushka dance together. Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte has other actors like Priety Zinta and Rani Mukerji joining Shah Rukh on stage. I cannot talk about these songs, as the promos are not out yet.
Dance Pe Chance has Anushka teaching Shah Rukh how to dance. It is a western song with an Indian touch.

Check out Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi!

After lying low for more than a year, Shah Rukh Khan will be seen this December with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The film stars newcomer Anushka Sharma, a model. The low-budget film has only three characters, played by Shah Rukh, Vinay Pathak and Anushka.

Making Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi look real

If you liked the earthy look of Chandra Prakash Dwivedi's Pinjar, then you would like Aditya Chopra's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as well.
Art director Muneesh Sappel (inset) tells Nithya Ramani how he made Amritsar come alive in Rab Ne.
This is your first time with the Yash Raj banner. How did you bag Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?
I was offered Veer-Zaara and Fanaa earlier but the dates did not match. When Adi decided on Rab Ne, he asked me if I could do the film. My dates matched and we worked together.

The Yash Success Formula

Big banners usually spell big debuts. And there are quite a few to Yash Raj Films credit.
The latest being model-turned-actress Anushka Sharma who gets ready to face the limelight as her maiden release, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi opposite Shah Rukh Khan opens this Friday.
Till then, here's a look at some of the past debuts made under the Yash Raj flagship.

Jiah Khan's Sexiest Photoshoot

After enticing Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd, Jiah Khan gave Maxim magazine one of her sexiest photoshoots. The actress, who stars in Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini out this month, is sure to capture many hearts, thanks to Maxim and photographer R Burman.

What Aamir Khan won't do for Ghajini!

It seems that Aamir Khan is willing to do quite a lot for his upcoming film, Ghajini. First, he shaved his head. Then, he whipped up his body into deadly shape. And now, he's all set to dazzle us with six new looks in a single song!
Titled Behka, the song sees Aamir playing six outrageous characters to woo his heroine, Asin. And here's a sneak peek.
We start off with this chest-baring outfit which is sure to give a certain stylish Khan a complex. We're very sure, though, that the girls aren't complaining.

'There is a wrong perception that Aamir interferes while shooting'

Did Aamir want these changes made?
No. Everyone decided the script needed changes. (Director) A R Murugadoss wanted to make some changes in the Tamil film but could not, so he made them in the Hindi version. It was not only Aamir's decision. Everyone gives their inputs and eventually, it is the director's prerogative to change or not.
There is a wrong perception that Aamir interferes while shooting. He discusses everything before the shooting starts. Once the shooting starts, he is just an actor and does what his director asks him to.
You are the cinematographer of Shah Rukh Khan's Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi as well. How different are the two actors?
Everyone is different. Shah Rukh is friendlier with the crew and knows everybody by their names. He greets everyone when he comes and leaves the sets.
On the other hand, Aamir may not know everybody's name but he is friendly with them. Both are very approachable.
Shah Rukh is very serious while Aamir is very funny. Both are great minds, that's why they're superstars.

The film has reportedly earned an estimated sum of Rs 90 crore (Rs 900 million) by selling its distribution rights

We got a sneak peek at Aamir Khan's new film, Ghajni when our reader sent these on-the sets pictures. The Hindi remake of the Tamil hit is being directed by A R Murugadass, who also directed the original.
Asin, who starred in the original is acting in this Hindi remake too.

'Shah Rukh is very serious while Aamir is very funny'

Cinematographer Ravi Chandran has created magic with his camera many times before in Dil Chahta Hai, Fanaa, Saawariya, Black, Yuva...
This month, he works with two superstars, Aamir Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, in two most-awaited films -- Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi respectively.
He tells Nithya Ramani how different the movies and the two Khans are from each other:
You're shooting the Hindi version of Ghajini, even though you hadn't done the Tamil version. What made you take it up?
The cinematography of the Tamil film was done by my assistant, Rajasekhar. Aamir happened to see the Tamil Ghajini when he was shooting for Fanaa. He liked the film for its tight screenplay and wanted to make it in Hindi. Personally, remakes don't excite me. But Aamir insisted that I do the film. The dates matched and we did it.
The Hindi version is the same as the Tamil, with a few changes in the second half. In the Tamil film, the second half is very violent. We portrayed that more subtly in the Hindi version, and removed the villain angle.
